Psychodrama Balint Group

English

–CloseD–

Balint psychodrama stems from the partnership of two practices: classic Balint group and psychoanalytic psychodrama. In Balint psychodrama the presenter of the case is engaged in retrieving, in action, with the participation of the group members , moments in the consultation presented at the beginning of the session, bringing into life the doctor – patient relationship.

At first glimpse the doctor-patient-relationship seems to be an affair concerning only two people, which in fact is true in many cases. Michael Balint, however, suggested to come to an overall-diagnosis, that might include not only somatic and psychological aspects but social factors as well. On many occasions the doctor is confronted with a net of relationships, brought in by the patient. In some Balint group sessions we realize that the doctor himself is involved in a professional network, like a team or the healthcare system, which influence what he thinks or does. At this point we have to deal with a whole system of relationships when we look at what is happening between the doctor and the patient. Sculpturing is a well established method in systemic family therapy (Virginia Satir). We use it in Balint groups in addition to the group discussion to make the systemic context perceivable in which the doctor-patient-encounter is embedded. This method facilitates and intensifies the access to emotions, fantasies and new perspectives, using body language and mirror neurons.
